The PSD sensor is highly suitable for self positioning or optical tracking systems embedded onboard ships, aircraft, ROV,UAVs, UGVs, microsatellites and landers. GPS based self positioning systems are slow and inaccurate. Besides, they do not allow moving objects to be tracked and may suffer from signal dropouts.

BALEA Group, established in France, is a leading player in the logistic solutions. With its research facilities in the South of France and operations worldwide among all large manufacturing players, BALEA was the first weigthing company to obtain Class III at European level. The challenge includes providing a solution with a small system in a cost-effective optical way to measure the volume of a product in order to extract three parameters: length, width and height of the smallest rectangular box that can contain that product. It must be recorded in real-time, providing automated integration to a PC. The Challenger Company is looking for an optical solution; for example, light-emitting diode (LED) array. The solution could also exist on a low cost, low resolution scanning device. The challenge details will be disclosed to all Solvers who agree to accept a Non-Disclosure Agreement in order to get further details of the solution needed.

Flat Passive Infrared Detector for Lighting Control

FLAT PASSIVE INFRARED DETECTOR FOR LIGHTING CONTROL

16-09-2015

The company has a strong responsibility towards energy efficiency solutions and lighting control is one of the key savings factors. Passive Infrared (PIR) detectors are one of the most popular type of sensors, providing detection of presence and absence to control lighting and other appliances. In some circumstances, current designs of PIR detectors are ineffective, particularly where the detector is at a large distance from the detection target. Detectors have been increasing in size to cope with this problem. However, increasing the size of detectors increases prices and installation costs while reducing aesthetics, space and ergonomy. Ideally, a wall-mounted PIR should not protrude from the wall at all but some depth is required in order to provide 180º vision. The goal of this challenge is to find a 180º PIR detector capable of providing reliable detection over long distances (9-12m) while keeping the lowest possible profile on the wall. The depth of the device must be significantly less than that of the current models. The company also wants the sensor to look like a conventional switch. That is to say, the final product should be a flat product. The company is looking for the best compromise in reducing the depth of its PIR sensors and keeping a flat form factor by finding a new sensing technique, an improved lens configuration or a combination of both. Naturally, new sensing techniques must be reliable to avoid false triggering and provide immunity against white light and air turbulence.
