Plasmonic detector which can improve the quantum efficiency of semiconductor infrared photodetectors by increasing the coupling to the incident light as a result of resonant coupling to surface plasma waves using a metal photonic crystal integrated on top of the device's absorption region. The dark current of the device is not affected which results in an improved detectivity over the surface plasma wave spectral bandwidth.
