Currently, colonoscopy is the most sensitive test for diagnosing IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) and screening for colon cancer. In colonoscopy, a flexible endoscope is used to examine the inner wall of the entire length of the large intestine, from the rectum to the caecum. Even though colon cancer is 90% successfully treated if detected at an early stage, The compliance rate for 45 screening is only 30% in the United States. This resistance to regular colonoscopies is due, in large part, to the fact that the procedure is extremely uncomfortable. The uncomfortable nature of the procedure is due, in part, to the trial-and-error manipulations of the scope in order to navigate the flexible and elastic colon. An optical fiber medical device comprising a plurality of sensors configured to report the shape (e.g., bend, pitch or yaw) and position of the medical device by spectral fluorescence emission and detection techniques

Tech for Transfer

TTO

17-12-2015

This invention presents an improved photonic spectrograph for accurately measuring and displaying spectra from radiation signals received from a telescope. It includes a photonic imaging device with a plurality of input ports for receiving incident electromagnetic radiation containing one or more spatial propagation modes; a coupling device attached to a multi-mode optical fibre for efficiently coupling the incident electromagnetic radiation into a plurality of single-mode optical fibres; an optical manipulation device which selectively combines the single-mode signals into a continuous optical spectrum; and an optical detector for detecting the continuous optical spectrum.

Optical Fiber 3D Solar Cells

OPTICAL FIBER 3D SOLAR CELLS

Tech for Transfer

TTO

19-12-2015

In this invention, a dye-sensitized solar cell for harvesting solar energy is integrated with a piezoelectric nanogenerator for harvesting ultrasonic wave energy. The two energy harvesting approaches can work simultaneously or individually and can be integrated in parallel or in series for increasing the output current, voltage or power, respectively. The solar cell employs an optical fiber and semiconductor nanowires grown around the fiber. The fiber can transmit light, while the nanowires increase the surface area of light exposure. Light propagates through the fiber until it enters a nanowire where it reaches a photovoltaic element. Light in the fiber cannot escape until it interacts with a photovoltaic element, thereby increasing solar conversion efficiency.
