This invention presents a new technique for evanescent coupling of an optical fiber to a waveguide. A portion of the fiber cladding near the end of the fiber is removed and the fiber core is placed directly on top of a waveguide formed on a substrate. The fiber core overlaps with the waveguide to enable optical evanescent coupling via side surfaces of the fiber core and the waveguide. The technique yields a large alignment tolerance, hence is relatively simple to implement, and can significantly lower the cost of optoelectronic packaging.
