Patent portfolio consisting of 16 assets in total, including 7 issued US patents, Canadian Patents and EP, JP and pending patents Most of the patents have a very early priority date (1997), and include claims covering subject matter that was not introduced into worldwide markets until many years, if not more than a decade later. Together, the US patents only have been cited over 170 times by other applicants.

Photonic crystals providing enhanced stimulated Raman lasing

PHOTONIC CRYSTALS PROVIDING ENHANCED STIMULATED RAMAN LASING

Tech for Transfer

TTO

16-12-2015

Photonic crystals with a layer of Silicon having a lattice of holes and a linear defect that forms a waveguide are configured to receive pump light and output Stokes light through Raman scattering. The thickness of the layer of Silicon, the spacing of the lattice of holes, and the size of the holes are dimensioned to provide enhanced Raman lasing.

OPTICAL TESTING OF A MULTI QUANTUM WELL SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE

OPTICAL TESTING OF A MULTI QUANTUM WELL SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE

Tech for Transfer

TTO

16-12-2015

A pump light pulse generates a strain pulse in a sample that includes quantum wells. The strain pulse triggers a change in an optical property of the sample producing a signal. The signal is measured using a probe light pulse which is delayed in relation to the pump light pulse. Parameters of interest of the sample, including the quantum wells, can be deduced from the characteristics of the signal. For discerning between various components of the stress in the quantum wells, a lead pump pulse preceding the pump light pulse may also be used. A system for the application of such methods is also disclosed.

Photonic integrated waveguides with low absorption loss

PHOTONIC INTEGRATED WAVEGUIDES WITH LOW ABSORPTION LOSS

Tech for Transfer

TTO

17-12-2015

Asymmetric twin waveguides (ATG) present a promising method for optoelectronic integration by needing only a single epitaxial growth step and a simple fabrication process for even the most complex photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design. This invention provides an ATG structure that employs quantum-well intermixing (QWI) to reduce absorption loss normally encountered in the movement of light between waveguides. QWI relies on the mixing of the quantum well and barrier materials of an active region, resulting in an alloy whose bandgap is intermediate between that of the wells and barriers.

Photon pair source controlled by quantum dots

PHOTON PAIR SOURCE CONTROLLED BY QUANTUM DOTS

Tech for Transfer

TTO

18-12-2015

The invention presents a method for the production of a photon pair source to generate entangled photon pairs, where the operational behaviour of the source is determined by adjusting the fine structure splitting of the excitonic energy level of one or more quantum dots. The fine structure splitting can be adjusted by depositing the quantum dot(s) on a particular crystal face of a semiconductor substrate.
