The present invention provides a method of changing the intensity of a reflected beam by directing a second beam of light at the point of reflection. The method includes: (a) a substrate bearing a film of a reflective material; (b) directing a first beam of light at the reflective material so as to create a reflecting beam; (c) directing a second beam of light at the reflecting point so as to alter the amount of light in the reflecting beam, and (d) detecting the change in the amount of light in the reflecting beam. The invention also includes an apparatus for changing the amount of reflected light and measuring that change, as well as related apparatus for a pulsed optical signal.

Asymmetric twin waveguides (ATG) present a promising method for optoelectronic integration by needing only a single epitaxial growth step and a simple fabrication process for even the most complex photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design. This invention provides an ATG structure that employs quantum-well intermixing (QWI) to reduce absorption loss normally encountered in the movement of light between waveguides. QWI relies on the mixing of the quantum well and barrier materials of an active region, resulting in an alloy whose bandgap is intermediate between that of the wells and barriers.

This invention allows the use of polarized laser light to provide improved control of ion yields during desorption of a sample. Silicon microcolumn arrays are used to harvest light from a laser pulse to produce ions. Photonic ion sources enable enhanced control of ion production on a micro/nano scale and direct integration with miniaturized analytical devices.

This invention provides a photonically-enabled RF transmitter and/or receiver. It includes a detection system comprising a photonic module, an RF module and processing circuitry capable of accurate range measurements. It allows for multiple modes of operation of the system. The carrier frequency, the modulation technique and the processing and/or output that is to be provided by the system can be selected on the fly. It can be set up to support very wide ranges of carrier frequencies that can be modulated and processed in different ways in a relatively rapid fashion. Such a system may also be accurate enough to be useful for subscale radar testing, and be capable enough to be employed in the field. In addition, this system can be used as a flexible, tunable wideband signal generator or frequency source.

This invention presents a photovoltaic cell contained within a photonic crystal structure. It incorporates both photovoltaic and photonic structures into a single unit. The photonic crystal guides and concentrates sunlight into a photonic optical cavity, which is composed of photovoltaic material comprising a semiconductor heterojunction for forming a photovoltaic current. The solar cell is self-focusing in that it utilizes the known property of photonic crystals to propagate light in any direction, provided that the light is within a transmissible band. This property is exploited here to also make the device more efficient by concentrating incoming light into the photovoltaic region.
